HOMELESS COALITION

How to Get Help

At The Homeless Coalition, we are dedicated to providing essential services for our community. Our programs encompass Emergency Shelter, Hunger Prevention, and Homeless Prevention. Our Fabulous Finds Re-Sale Shop provides high quality shopping for less and financially supports the services we provide.

We understand the unique circumstances faced by individuals and families experiencing or at risk of experiencing homelessness and hunger. While our services are tailored to meet the specific needs of our clients, we operate within certain parameters and eligibility criteria. If you believe you may qualify call us at (941) 627-4313 or visit in-person at 1476 Kenesaw Street in Port Charlotte, Florida, Monday-Friday between 9am and 5pm.

Together, let's navigate the path to our mission to alleviate and prevent hunger and homelessness.

Emergency shelter

Our Emergency Shelter provides a safe, supervised, low barrier shelter for up to 30-days. On any given day, 10-15 children and their families call the Emergency Shelter home. Our philosophy is to quickly move newly homeless clients from Emergency Shelter back into permanent housing through intensive case management. The number one service we provide is stability and keeping families intact. Over the past year, the Emergency Shelter gave safe refuge to over 398 people, including 66 children under 18.

homeless Prevention

Our Homeless Prevention Program practices the "Housing First" model for housing chronically homeless individuals. This model is a proven approach that believes anyone experiencing homelessness should be provided with permanent housing with few to no preconditions or barriers. It involves prioritizing people with the highest needs and vulnerabilities. We also partner with United Way Season of Sharing and Community Partners for assistance.

Hunger Prevention

Our Hunger Prevention program includes Hot Meals and Food Pantry. Hot Meals serves nutritious breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks 365 days per year to more than 150 individuals every day. Last year we served more than 82,000 hot meals and snacks to our Emergency Shelter residents and community members needing to stretch their food dollars. The Pantry distributes a three-day supply of food and toiletry items to over 80 individuals and families every week. Food items include fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen food, and non-perishable food.  We also provide food for pets to help offset increasing monthly expenses.

Success Stories

  • Meet Sara

When Sara came to The Homeless Coalition, she was fleeing a domestic violence situation and needed to escape to protect herself and her young boys. She found safety and many helping hands when she arrived at our emergency shelter. Soon she settled in and got into a routine, including a little shopping trip with the Deep Creek Elks for back-to-school items for her children.  She worked with her case manger who assisted her in budgeting, childcare, and permanent housing.

Sara is now happy in a home with her children and going back to work full time. She loved working with Erica who guided her to the path of future success.  Sara needs to settle into her new home and job but plans to volunteer with the Homeless Coalition in the shelter or administrative office, wherever she is needed. She said the staff is very helpful and fantastic and she would be happy to give back. Now she is looking forward for her future and is excited about all the new memories she has in front of her.

  • Meet Jennifer

Jennifer, addicted to narcotics, lost everything, including her family. She decided to get sober and made the difficult decision to release the care and custody of her 7-year-old daughter, Journey, to a friend. She completed 30 days of rehab, and arrived at the shelter in September. When asked what it was like to be homeless, Jennifer replied, “people see you differently; there are so many stereotypes and biases towards homeless people. When I was homeless, people would look away, they would not see me as the person that I am, and that was difficult and at times, humiliating.”

When questioned as to whether she considered “using” again, she gave a confident and resounding “NO.” She knew she lost everything because of her addiction. Last October, Jennifer and John signed a lease for a house in Port Charlotte. They feel blessed with better jobs, a home, food, & family. Jennifer will be starting a new career with more pay and benefits. John was promoted to manager, and their daughter Journey is thriving at school and reconnecting with friends. Jennifer’s story has not ended; it has only just begun.
